After three decades of ungentle supremacy Cryptopsy still make blasphemy sound fresh, but many underground metalheads trace the JUNO Award winners' resurgence to the two EPs they released during the mid-2010s. "The band is once again at the forefront of creative brutality" Angry Metal Guy wrote about the second chapter of The Book of Suffering. Cryptopsy cracked open this ongoing series by recounting the twisted-but-true tales of phobophiles who inflict unthinkable suffering. Tome II does shift perspective to those who've escaped their tormentors, but don't get it twisted; this EP is still plenty of proof as to why they're the most-vile band in the sordid history of death metal. "Sire of Sin" - a torturously fast escape from a notorious religious sex cult - quickly turned into a staple in the band's ever-mutating setlist. The Book of Suffering: Tome II was released independently back in 2018, which over the years, made it harder to hunt down. Now that the EP has been reissued on CD, fans can finally suffer in peace.
